Sea wolves bike ride to Gladstone 19th April 08
Report By Alan Charlton
09.00 April 19th saw members of the club waiting for their president to start their motor bike ride through the Adelaide Hills to Gladstone where they were going to spend the night behind bars in the Gladstone gaol.
About quarter past nine Rankin arrived and the group headed off on Cherry Gardens Road and along some other twisty windy and very tight turn of roads to the first stop at Summertown where the local deli was hit for munchies.
One particular member pulled out a flask of hot water and poured himself a latte.
After a short break it was off again with more very tight and extremely fast corners. The next stop was at Lyndoch this was the end of Chewie’s maps that he had organised for the trip. We were about half way there.
After a short wait the last of the stragglers arrived but the person driving the white commodore had two left hands and did not know which left to use. After being phoned by Chewie when he missed the turn, he did a U turn and then turned right. A very confused driver! This was also where Mustard joined the group with his sports car.
This was also the point where Mustard got lost and was not seen till much later in the afternoon at the Seven Hills Pub where we stopped for lunch.
A few beers and a long wait for Mustard, we all set off again for Gladstone. Several members detoured into some of the many wineries that were along the way. Most, however, headed straight for the gaol where the bikes and cars were safely locked up.
Once settled in, everyone then headed down to the nearest pub and watched a fantastic game of football as the Crows outscored the Kangaroos by an almost convincing margin.
After the game it was back to the gaol for a gourmet roast tea. The meals served in the gaol are world renowned (so we have been told) and did not disappoint?
Then it was back to the prison block for a social and a few drinks before heading off on the ghost tour. The best way to see the ghosts was to drink a few shots of whiskey first. Around midnight we were taken on a tour of the gaol and shown several areas where the ghosts are supposed to hang out.
I personally think I needed more spiritual assistance from the bottle to see the ghosts but who knows.
Next morning we were up somewhat early for a Sunday and a breakfast of bacon and eggs etc. After brekkie a hand full of us set off on Chewie’s unauthorized guided tour of the Gaol, seeing all the spots we were told not to go. (Photos were taken but cannot be displayed to protect the guilty.)
Then it was time to head back home. Most went back in a group however some made their own way home via different routes.
The weekend was a great success and enjoyable for those that took part and apart from one member getting a little dropsy with his Goldwing and a club president that could not get his bike started, it went off without incident.
