Dive at Port Stanvac Jetty Monday 24 Nov. 25

It has been some time since I have been for a local dive. The day looked promising until we launched the boat. In the marina at O’Sullivan Beach there were dead fish floating around the pontoons and the water in the marina was green with a thick coating of algae which was attached to the rocks and pontoons. As we went further out to sea heading towards Stanvac Jetty the boat pushed its way through dead fish. At the dive site we had reasonable vis and water temp was 18C.
However, as we descended towards the bottom you could see things were bad, the plant life was decimated although there were places that looked like it was trying to recover and at first the only form of marine life was dead crabs and muscles, everything on the structures was dead. With the crabs I checked that they were not just shells that had been Molted and inspection showed that it was a whole crab. Eventually we came across a living crab and then a few fish came out to great us.
This was a very sad dive especially as I can remember how plentiful and abundant life was at the jetty earlier in the year.
