Whyalla Cuttlefish dive

Over the weekend a group from the Seawolves Dive Club travelled to Whyalla with the intention to dive with the Cuttlefish. Friday night an intrepid group of divers set off for a dive under the Whyalla Jetty. They soon discovered that it was not diver friendly. The only way to get into the water was to climb down a rock face along the breakwater. However once in the water it was a very shallow dive with a sandy bottom and very little growth on the pylons. However, there were some crabs and octopi to be seen and after several circuits of the round jetty it was time to get out the water with a climb back up the rock face.

Saturday it was off to Point lowly to dive with the cuttlefish. The facilities at the point, made it a more user-friendly place to get changed and make your way into the water. Once in the water you immediately started seeing the cuttlefish. It was an amazing dive the cuttlefish came in various sizes from tiny to exceptionally large. As you swam there was just more and more appearing. Because the depth is shallow you can have a really good look around. It is a fantastic dive for taking photos.

After the dive there was time to stand around the firepit that was provided and have a coffee from the van.

Then it was back to the accommodation for a short break and then a few hardy members set out for a second night dive on the jetty. They enjoyed similar conditions as to the previous night. After the dive it was to the Eyre Hotel for a meal and a few beers. after which we returned to the accommodations for a few more beers and wines and some lively discussion on the day’s events.

Then Sunday morning arrived, and it was time to return home.
